Energy Storage: The Missing Link of Renewable Energy-Panel Discussion
Session # T12
Date/Venue Tuesday, 03/16/2010 1:00PM - 4:30PM , Room 206/207
Description Description:

Smart grid, green power, and renewable energy are changing the way the electric power industry does business. Where does the industry go from here? Is there something missing? Regrettably, there is one critical technology lagging behind – energy storage. Without energy storage the industry is locked into following the outdated policies of the 20th Century.

This panel session will explore the technologies available (thermal, kinetic, chemical, and electrical), and the applications of energy storage and the process of integrating renewable energy into the grid.

Panelists:

Chris Hickman, Sr. Vice President-ICE Energy

Grid-Connected Energy Storage

Dr. Silviu Darie - EDSA

Kevin Meagher, Chief Technology Officer-EDSA

Innovative Approach on Today's Energy Business-Paladin Micro Grid Controller

According to many and especially the Galvin Initiative, a major component to the success of the Smart Grid will be the development of a high reliability and availability Micro Grid Controller.  Perfect power more than coordination with the utility and load shedding but increased service and availability to the customer.  Dr. Silviu Darie and Kevin Meagher of EDSA will provide an overview and demonstration of the Micro Grid Controller that EDSA is installing at the University of California – San Diego (UCSD).  Developed from the EDSA mission critical software products this Micro Grid controller is ideally suited to the needs and plans of the Micro Grid.  From islanding and load control at the building level (HVAC and lighting) to market based optimization.
